Radiant barriers are installed in buildings to keep summer heat out and to protect against heat loss during the winter months. Radiant barriers generally consist of a thin sheet or coating of a highly reflective material, usually aluminum, that is applied to one or both sides of a number of substrate materials like craft paper, plastic film, cardboard, plywood sheathing and air infiltration barrier material. Other types of radiant barrier include reflective metal roof shingles, reflective laminated roof sheathing, and reflective chips.
Installation of radiant barriers in residential attics can be achieved by placing the material directly on top of existing attic insulation, by attaching it near the roof in one of several variations, by draping the radiant barrier over the tops of the rafters before the roof deck is applied or by attaching it directly to the underside of the roof deck.
While radiant barrier performs a similar function to that of attic insulation, it differs in how it reduces heat flow. Radiant barrier reduces the amount of heat "radiated" across an air space that is adjacent to the radiant barrier while conventional insulation only traps air within the insulation, thereby reducing heat from moving into the space beneath the attic space; your home.
